This study investigates mycotoxin contamination levels in herbal medicines that are not regulated by mycotoxin safety guidelines proposed by The Korean Pharmacopoeia and The Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia. We aim to provide datasets for establishing future safety guidelines for commercial herbal medicines. To monitor mycotoxins (zearalenone, ochratoxin A, fumonisin B1, and fumonisin B2) in herbal medicines, 103 samples were collected from randomly selected commercial retailers in Jeju-do and refined using an immunoaffinity column. Mycotoxin levels were analyzed in the samples using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and were detected in 10 samples (9.7%). Specifically, we found zearalenone in 2 samples (1.9%), ochratoxin A in 4 samples (3.9%), fumonisin B1 in 5 samples (4.9%), and fumonisin B2 in 1 sample (1.0%). At least two samples showed the presence of 2 types of mycotoxins. Our study detected four types of mycotoxins (ochratoxin A, zearalenone, fumonisin B1, and fumonisin B2) for which no safety guidelines are set in the Korean Pharmacopoeia and Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia. These results indicate the necessity to continuously monitor contamination levels of mycotoxins in herbal medicines.
